Ethiopian customer delighted with diffuser projects for sugar factories

BMA completes the order placed in 2012 by Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) for the delivery of two diffusers within deadline and wins follow-up orders.

Delivery and supervision by BMA

The key components for the two Ethiopian sugar factories “Beles 1” and “Beles 2” were shipped in four instalments in the course of the first six months of 2013. Manufacture of the local share of the equipment is due to start in 2014, and will be supervised by BMA experts to provide the necessary quality assurance. Subsequent installation of the diffuser sections will also be assisted and supervised by BMA.

Agreement reached on follow-up projects

While the project was still underway, the customer decided to place a follow-up order with BMA for the delivery of a third diffuser, to be installed in a factory that is planned for the Omo region, some 800 km to the south west of Addis Ababa. This factory is to have a nominal capacity of 12,000 tc/day. The new order also comprises basic and detailed engineering services, in addition to the delivery of the following key components:

  • Lifting screws for bagasse in the diffuser
  • Block chain for conveying the bagasse
  • Tail shaft and idler rollers for the block chain
  • Drive shaft, complete with bearings
  • Drive with gearbox and gear motor
  • Rotary screens for raw juice
  • Process control system and measuring & instrumentation equipment (complete)
  • Switchgear cubicles for the electrical equipment

METEC and BMA also signed an additional contract for the delivery of pumps for the three diffuser projects. Each diffuser is equipped with a total of 22 pumps, such as for conveying the extraction water, the interstage juice and the raw juice. Delivery of the equipment for the latter two orders is to be completed in three stages, by mid-2014.
