The Mayer family, owners of BMA, and Sebastian H. Brandes, CEO of SMAG, are making good progress on the merger of their worldwide mechanical engineering and construction activities. The goal of the planned merger is to create a new group of companies that embodies more diversity and greater stability in order to leverage existing synergies. Both companies have experienced strong growth, particularly abroad, and want to continue to do so in the future. The aim is to continue to expand business activities in all sectors by taking advantage of the additional market access and local manufacturing facilities. For example, SMAG would like to expand its services for mining machine activities into the USA. The BMA facility in Greeley, Colorado could serve as a future basis for this expansion. At the same time, SMAG's manufacturing capacity in India could be a door opener for BMA. After all, the subcontinent is currently among the world’s top 3 largest sugar producers. The partners will also be able to benefit mutually in the future markets of China and Russia.
The merger of the two medium-sized companies will create a mechanical engineering and construction company with a total turnover of approximately €300 million and 2,100 employees at 22 current locations around the world. Approximately 1,030 employees work at the locations in Braunschweig and Salzgitter, of which approximately 60 are apprentices.
Both companies share a decades-long tradition in the construction of machinery and equipment for various industries with a focus on international business activities. The managers of the companies also know each other well – Sebastian H. Brandes has been a member of the Supervisory Board of BMA AG for many years. Both companies are active in the “KIM Kooperationsinitiative Maschinenbau” (mechanical engineering cooperative initiative) and have also had various common business opportunities in the region in the past.
“The management and shareholders of both companies view the merger very positively and are convinced that it will bring new possibilities and opportunities,” emphasises Sebastian H. Brandes. The preparations and necessary contracts are expected to be completed by mid-2018.
